About population and density of the district
The district has a population of 1,19,307 (as per Census 2001). The density of population is only 8 persons per sq. km. The decennial growth rate (1991-2001) works out to 31.39%. The Tehsil wise population as per Census 2001 is:-

In Kargil district the Schedule Tribes of Ladakh region constitute about 99% of the total population of the district. Thus the benefit of the plans in the district squarely flow to the Schedule Tribes which is healthy sign and can improve a lot for the schedule tribes in the district so as to bring them at par with the other communities on a sound footing of equality.
